WHO WE ARE

Girls Troop 860 began February, 2019.  The troop is chartered by the Hermosa Beach Rotary Club which was started in 1931 and is part of Rotary International.   Girls Troop 860 stresses outdoor outings, community service, and leadership development in the framework of a scout-led troop.

GIRLS TROOP 860 PROFILE

• Balanced Approach - Advancement and Adventure. 
• Variety of activities including high adventure, camping, traditional scouting, and family events
• Scout-led troop: scouts plan, organize, and lead all meetings and adventures; Trained Adult supervision/guidance
• Meetings: every Wednesday at the picnic tables at the south end of Valley Park, 2521 Valley Drive, Hermosa Beach, 7:00 - 8:30 PM (drop in anytime)
• Who Can Join: Girls ages 11‐17 or Completed 5th grade or Earned Webelos Arrow of Light
• Membership from Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Rancho Palos Verdes, and surrounding areas
• Registration Fees: Currently $160/year/Scout; $54/year/adult, (pro-rated for those joining mid-year); Outings and campout fees vary

WHAT DOES GIRLS TROOP 860 DO?

•  Week-long BSA Summer Camps (including Camp Big Horn, (July 2021), Chawanakee, & Camp Emerald Bay)

•  Approximately 30 campouts each year**
• Backpacking overnights (1‐10 days wilderness camping/hiking)**

•  Day adventures twice a month

• High Adventure (Sierra Trek, Florida Sea Base, Philmont, John Muir Trail, John Muir Way)

• Family campouts (Kayak, White water, Rock climbing, Surfing,)

• Local area: sailing, biking, fishing, archery, shooting, urban hike

• Service projects for our community and the local trails

• Learn about science, sports, crafts, trades, STEM, business, and future careers by earning merit badges, (currently over 130 different badges to choose from)

** Current LACDPH and Greater Los Angeles Council guidelines do not allow non-BSA sponsored overnight camping/backpacking at this time.

GIRLS TROOP 860 ACTIVITIES

  • Overnight at BSA Camp Trask with Archery and Rifle

  • Camporee campout and scout competition

  • Orienteering Campout at Mt. Pinos

  • Week at BSA Camp Chawanakee  (Shaver Lake in the Sierras)

  • Snowshoe backpack

  • Overnight backpack in the Los Padres National Forest

  • Overnight backpack in the Angeles National Forest including two peaks: Mt. Hawkins and Throop Peak

  • Mt. Whitney: 7 night backpack

  • 5-mile hike to visit Troop 860 Eagle Projects

  • 5-mile hike to the Hollywood sign

  • 10-mile hike along the San Gabriel River in the Angeles National Forest

  • Merit badge days: Veterinary Medicine Day and STEM Day at Northrop Grumman 

  • Service Projects: participating in several Eagle scout projects

  • Service Project: volunteering at Troop's American Red Cross Blood Drive

  • Tidepool Hike with marine biology exploration (Abalone Cove)

  • Beach Hike with kite flying

  • Nature Hike at Manhattan Beach Botanical Gardens & Polliwog Park

  • Stunt-kite flying and beach sand sculptures

  • Long Beach Sea Base Kayaking and Canoeing

  • Weekly Troop meeting in Valley Park with hybrid zoom option
